This is the start of an email message which has been arriving in my inbox with alarming frequency in the last few weeks. Frankly, I can't keep the smile of my face. Let me explain...
Site Build It is a program that I am an affiliate for. Have been for some time. It compliments my services beautifully and offers an alternative DIY solution to custom website design, one that actually works.
Now, as a Site Build It affiliate, I earn a commission when I refer a visitor and they purchase. The "conversion rate" on my referrals, i.e. the ratio of referrals to purchases, has traditionally been somewhere around 1%. Although it tended to be under the average of all Site Build It affiliates, it's probably comparable to what most affiliate marketers achieve on average for the majority of affiliate programs they promote.
But right now, my conversion rate is around 12%.
Why the big jump?
The answer is video.
SBI recently asked users to submit their own videos based on their successes with SBI, for a contest. You can see some of those videos here. Following on from that contest, a tool was created which allowed affiliates to put those videos on their own websites. The process is simple, just select your video and paste some code on your website. At the end of the video a message is shown to click for more info. You can see an example of one of those videos on the home page of my site.
Why are they so effective?
First of all, they are very eye catching and impossible to miss when you put them at the top of the page. And, unlike your typical corporate video, they are made by real people sharing real experiences. They connect on an emotional level. You'll see the one on my home page is rather wacky and off the wall, but it's hugely effective.
There's also a viral aspect to these videos. Viewers can click an "Add to Site" button, where the code is displayed, or a "Share" button where you can email it to a friend. In both cases my affiliate ID is passed on so I get credited with any direct or sub-affiliate sales. Brilliant!
So, how can YOU benefit from all of this?
Firstly, if you have a content site and would like to add an income stream to it, become a Site Build It affiliate (costs nothing). Once you are accepted just navigate to the Video Build It section of the members area to select a video and get the code. It's really quite simple but if you need assistance I'm happy to help. Then just wait for those "Yup, another sale" messages to start flooding in! Each time that happens, you'll earn around $75 plus on-going commissions.
If you have a sales, service or e-commerce site consider adding video as an introduction to your site. Note how Ken Evoy (Site Build It president) does it on the SBI home page. This is another reason for the high conversion rate on my referrals.
