You don't need a huge budget to market your site. In fact, some of the best methods are free. Here are a few techniques to get you started:

Create an Effective e-Mail Signature (sig) File

Most email software programs allow you to create a signature file which is added to all your outgoing messages. Create a short and punchy message that compels readers to click through to your site.

Start Your Own Newsletter

A proven method of building customer loyalty and repeat visits to your site. But, every man and his dog have a newsletter these days, and people are weary of giving out their email address. You need to have good quality content to retain your readers. An incentive (such as a free gift) to join your list can help.

For mailing list management, the service I use and recommend is AWeber. Although you can manage your mailing list yourself, you'll find that as your list grows, an automated system for collecting opt-in subscribers and mailing to that list becomes essential. AWeber allows you to put special code on your site which will automatically request confirmation from your subscribers - thus making them "double opt-in" - and add them to your subscribers list. With double opt-in, you can be absolutely sure that your subscribers want to receive your mailings.

With AWeber you can "broadcast" to your mailing list, as you would for a newsletter, plus you can program it to send a number of pre-written messages to your subscribers. This is known as an "autoresponder" and is a VERY effective marketing tool.

Post to Moderated Discussion Groups

Join a discussion on any topic you are able to contribute to. Include your signature file (where permitted) at the end of your post. Pick the right groups and you'll see an immediate boost to your traffic, plus if the issue is archived a permanent link will be created to your site. For starters try LED Digest.

Article Marketing

Writing articles and syndicating them for use by webmasters and newsletter publishers is a great way to gain exposure, traffic and links to your site. This is one of the best website promotion methods around, and it's free.

Recommended Internet Marketing Resources

The subject of Internet Marketing is HUGE. Try doing a search for "Internet Marketing" at Google and you'll see around millions of pages. There is a lot of information out there, some good, some not so good. There are many self proclaimed experts. Where do you start?

From my personal experience there are three two marketers whose advice I value; Ken Evoy and Ralph Wilson. Why re-invent the wheel? These guys are highly successful web marketers who don't just teach theory, they actually show you how they do it! Between the three of them, you will find all the resources you will ever need to build a successful online business.

Ken Evoy

Already a successful emergency medical practitioner and toy designer (talk about an over-achiever) Ken created a software package called PennyGold (an investment tool for penny mining stocks) and set about learning how to sell it on the Web. This was not an easy product to sell (high priced, specialized market) but Ken sold all the copies he intended to sell (sales were limited because he didn't want to dilute the value of the product).

As a result of that experience Ken created his first book called Make Your Site Sell. It was updated and revamped to become MYSS. I have re-read this book many times. Although it is getting a bit old now (in Internet time) to me it is still the standard by which others are judged. Ken is the real deal. If you want to sell on the Net, MYSS is a great place to start!

Since writing writing MYSS and other "Make Your...." books Ken put all his knowledge and resources into developing an online website builder like no other.
