Spyware Doctor - Security Task Manager

If you spend a large amount of time online running your Internet business, then sooner or later you will be confronted with security and privacy issues. And because you are dealing with your customers in an online environment this issue becomes even more important, because you will need to protect their security and privacy as well.

The threat of attack by hackers, criminals, spammers and unethical marketers who invade your privacy is always present. Have you ever noticed that your system is running slower than it should or you are receiving a constant barrage of pop-up ads from the same companies? Chances are, you have some unwelcome and uninvited visitors on your system!

Spyware, Adware, Malware, Scumware and many other "wares" could be lurking on your system!

How do you find these uninvited visitors, evict them, and put out the "Unwelcome" mat for those who would follow? Read on...

Having been victim to most of these threats I've put together a suite of resources that have a permanent place on my desktop. I recommend them to you simply because I use them and they work. Some are free and some are not, but please don't wait until you fall victim to online nasties. Protect yourself, your family, your business AND your clients.

Spyware Doctor - Adware/Spyware Remover

If you're ever experienced advertising pop-ups that seem to constantly appear whatever websites you visit, you've probably had "adware" or "spyware" installed on your system without your knowledge or approval. What's more, this software may be tracking your surfing habits and reporting back to it's authors on which websites you have been visiting.

"Spyware" is a common term for files that are installed on your system without your knowledge that allow companies to monitor your Internet activity.

"AdWare" is software that will show you popup ads over and over.

Anti Spyware and Spyware Removal

Both of these "wares" are intrusive, slow your PC's performance and compromise your privacy and security. I have found that most of my customers were unaware that spyware or adware was installed on their system and were shocked to find how much of their personal information they were transmitting to unethical marketers.

My advice - get rid of this garbage from your PC NOW! An anti spyware tool or spyware remover is essential for keeping your data safe.

AdAware SE or Spyware Doctor?

Until recently my software of choice for spyware removal was AdAware SE. I've been using AdAware for some time but I recently discovered something better. It's called Spyware Doctor. A free trial was included in one of those discs you get with various PC magazines so I thought I'd give it a run. Man, was I glad I did!

After running Spyware Doctor it found several potentially dangerous applications on my PC that AdAware had not picked up. These included a "key logger" which can record and report the actual keys typed on your keyboard. Great huh? The next time you type your credit card number when making an online purchase you could be transmitting that information to persons unknown!

Another thing I like about Spyware Doctor is you can set it up for real-time monitoring. The "OnGuard" feature will detect and delete (if you wish) cookies and browser hijackers (ever wondered why your default home page had been changed to some site you know nothing about?). The Browser Monitor reports on safe browser extensions (indicated by a green dot) as well as those that are potentially dangerous.

The "Immunizer" feature ensures that your computer is immunised against the latest Active-X threats that can sneak into your PC, and the "Scheduler" allows you to schedule full or quick scans. There is also a "Live Update" to ensure your software is always up-to-date.

Summary

Spyware Doctor has proven to be an efficient, thorough and trustworthy spyware remover. So I guess it's goodbye AdAware and hello Spyware Doctor!

UPDATE: If you are a Spyware Doctor user and SD is detecting a threat called trojan.proxy.gn you may have experienced the same problem I did in removing this threat. The answer is to make sure you are running the latest version. I updated to version 3.2 which had no problem with this (it seems to be a bug in the previous version) and detected 14 new threats which the old version didn't. So, update NOW!

Spyware Doctor remains my pick of spyware/malware detectors. Essential!

Security Task Manager

This is a great little utility that will show you what is really going on in the background while you use your PC. Security Task Manager displays in graphic form all your active Windows processes and lists them in order of their potential danger.

Just click on a process and STM will give you all the relevant data it has about that process, and based on its existing knowledge will advise you of its potential danger. By clicking on a "Google" button STM will take you to a dedicated page on its website which contains information on that process submitted by other users. This will further help you determine if the process is dangerous.

To remove a process just click on the Remove button or the Quarantine button if you are unsure. This will allow you to restore it later if you wish.

Used in conjunction with a spyware remover Security task Manager will give you comprehensive protection against malicious code and peace of mind!
