Web Page Design Tips
Web page design involves more than the technical aspects of writing HTML code or mastering web page creation software. You must always consider how your visitor responds to you web page.
My Web Page Design Tips
- Keep it simple. The K.I.S.S concept is vitally important on the Web. Keep your design simple and uncluttered.
- Always use a plain white background for your main text body. Use black text with Verdana (or similar) font. This gives you the best readability. There's a reason why you don't see black backgrounds on successful sales sites. Don't be tempted, unless the theme of the site absolutely warrants it.
- Keep graphics to a minimum and only use when required e.g. to draw a viewer's attention to a block of text. Always optimise your graphics for the Web in image processing software such as Photoshop. This will keep the file size as small as possible without losing to much detail. Simple, solid colour graphics work best as gifs. Photos and graphics with multiple colours and shadings work best as jpegs.
- Use headings and sub-headings to break up your text. Paragraphs should be a maximum of about 3 sentences. Avoid large blocks of text. Remember that most viewers will scan your text looking for snippets that interest them, rather than reading it line by line.
- Avoid designing exclusively in Flash. It's a well known fact that search engines have trouble indexing Flash sites. It's ok to add Flash animations to a regular site, to draw the visitor's attention, but don't create an all-Flash site.
- Never, ever, put "Under Construction" signs on your site.
- Never, ever, put "Free Web Counters' on your site. Consider the message you are giving your visitors i.e. you're small time. Ever see "hit counters" on MSN or Google? No one cares if you've had 43,124 visitors. They only care about what you are going to do for THEM.
- Free Web Hosts might be ok for "toe in the water" site building and concept testing. If you want to build a serious business, get your own domain and hosting. Web hosting is relatively cheap these days. Domain names can be registered for under $10.
- Give your visitors what they came for - information. Remember that when people use the Web they are not looking for you. They are looking for information and solutions to their problems.
- Research the profit potential of your site before you even think about building a site. Don't put the cart before the horse. In other words provide information, solve problems and get traffic. Only then can you "monitize" your site.
- Research your targeted keywords. How often are they searched for? How many other sites are competing for top search engine placement on those keywords? What will be required to get on the first page of search results for those keywords? There are some good keyword research tools around. Use them.
- Write your content as if you're speaking directly to your visitor one to one. Keep it light and breezy. Avoid jargon.
- Write in a conversational, friendly tone. Focus on your visitor. Replace "we" with "you".
- Don't talk about your business or the "features" of your product or service. Talk about "benefits" and how you will solve a problem or make your visitor's life better. Your visitor wants to know "what's in it for me?" Tell them!
